Politics of Pugs comes to Portland for the Pug Nation Pug Crawl

Comments Off

A Better Pug for a Better America! That’s the theme of the Oregon Humane Society’s 12th Annual Pug Crawl, known this year as “Pug Nation.” With presidential elections six months away, pug lovers have decided to offer candidates of their own for the White House. Pug Nation is expected to be one the largest gathering of pugs in the world, attracting an estimated 500 four-legged friends and more than 1,000 people. Like any good political event, there will be food, beer, live music, and refreshments. All well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome — Pug Nation does not discriminate against breeds.

The highlight of the day is the Parade of Pugs, where, if past tradition holds, almost 100 costumed pugs will walk the runway and compete for the title of President of Pug Nation. We don’t know if the winner will be a Repuglican or a Demopug, or perhaps from a third party (Pugs for Peace?). We do know the winner will be chosen based on the creativity and originality of his or her costume.

The festivities take place from 1 pm – 4 pm outside MacTarnahan’s Taproom, 2730 Northwest 31st Avenue in Portland, Ore. MacTarnahan’s Taproom, part of Portland’s oldest microbrewery, will offer beer and classic brew-house cuisine for the pug owners and spectators, along with limited-edition Pug Nation pint glasses. Attendees can also visit the Pug Kissing Booth, get their pug washed and groomed, and shop for pet merchandise. Everyone is welcome, with our without a dog.

Helping Pets in Need

The 2011 Pug Crawl raised nearly $10,000 to help abandoned, abused and unwanted animals. OHS, the largest and oldest humane society in the Northwest, relies entirely on private donations to find homes for more than 11,500 animals a year. A $10 donation to the OHS is requested.
